Saracens Hertfordshire League Division 10 Match Reports

6th September - Stevenage 4th XI vs Ware

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 64 runs

- Stevenage 4ths suffured a disappointing defeat to Ware failing to chase 152 to win, despite a gutsy effort with ball and bat by Captain Trevor Scott-Hibbert. The loss leaves Stevenage in the last of the four relegation places and unless the number of teams to be relegated changes they will be competing in Division 11 in 2004.
Man of the Match - Trevor Scott-Hibbert

30th August - Stevenage 4th XI vs Hatch End 2nd XI

RESULT - Stevenage Won by 3 wickets

- Stevenage 4ths completed a club clean sweep and kept their chance of avoiding relegation alive. They won it in the field with a superb bowling display by Matt John (17 overs, 4 for 19) which restricted the visitors batters. Simon Houston (32) then saw them home with 3 wickets to spare
Man of the Match - M. John

23rd August - Weston vs Stevenage 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 6 wickets

Stevenage 4ths put up a tremendous performance against table topping Weston. Batting first the 4's recovered from 27-4 to a total of 147. Jack Mitchell unfortunately run out for 39 and John Pickin not out 29 were the pick.

Weston then came out to bat expecting a quick victory, but found themselves having to face 40 overs and the loss of 4 wickets before scoring the required runs. They might have found this an even more difficult task, if Pickin had not pulled a hamstring whilst bowling.
Man of the Match - J. Mitchell

16th August - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs Dunstable

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 6 wickets

Stevenage 4ths were depleted and with only 4 regular players were no match for a Dunstable side they would have normally hoped to have beaten.
Captain Trevor Scott-Hibbert arrived at the ground, straight from the airport to find he had a team of 9 players. This was boosted to 10 by young Chris Whitworth. Stevenage won the toss and elected to bat, but unfortunately none of the Stevenage players were able to cope with the two veteran spinners from Dunstable. Only Pateman 24, Crompton 15 and Sullivan 14 got into double figures.

Despite an early breakthrough by Pateman, Dunstable steadily picked off the runs. A good spell from Wallace at the end with 3 wickets going down for 3 runs showed what might have been with a higher total to bowl at.
Man of the Match - J. Pateman

9th August - Datchworth vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Won by 22 runs

Stevenage 4ths recorded a second consecutive victory as they eventually defeated Datchworth 2nds by 22 runs. However victory was only secured after a magnificent batting recovery from 105 for 8. Special mention should go to Simon Houston and Andy Whitehead who made up the 2nd and 3rd wickets of a hatrick for an un-named Datchworth bowler. (Can't recall who was the first victim). A short lesson on batting is also to be learned here, which is if your next man in, watch the damn game! Andy Whitehead had been batting in the nets during the first two dismissals and on walking out to find a field comprising a ring of slips, short legs and silly points he thought to himself, "hey, hey, there's some runs to be had here" contently oblivious to the fact the bowler was gunning for 3 wickets from 3 balls. So he launched into an expansive drive and was cleaned bowled. It was left to Matt John to save the day, he came in at 10 with the cause apparently lost but he hammered the home attack for 53 to make a respectable team total of 188.

Victory then looked certain with the home side reduced to 110 for nine (with 4 wickets for Andy Gould and 3 a piece for Matt John and stand in skipper Ian Wilson), but another remarkable turn in fortune nearly saw Datchworth steal the match as they took advantage of some dropped catches before Stevenage won a keenly contested match with four balls to spare.
Man of the match:- M.John

2nd August - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs Knebworth 5ths

RESULT - Stevenage Won by 3 wickets

Stevenage 4ths ended a barren run with a win over near neighbours Knebworth
Trevor Scott-Hibbert finally won the toss and decided to put Knebworth in. A good opening spell from Martin Price and John Mould saw the first three wickets fall for 31 runs, but Knebworth's middle order then dug in against economical bowling from Pateman and Wilson. Sensing it needed the recall of Price for a second spell to finish them off, Scott-Hibbert made the change and Price obliged.

Stevenage's reply began with the early loss of Whitworth for 6, but Pateman played beautifully for a fluent 37. This brought Trevor Jones to the crease and his well worked 40, together with quick runs from Sullivan, Mitchell and Price, saw the 4's home for their second league victory. It should be noted, although it should not take the gloss of a good 4th XI performance, that Stevenage benefited from poor Knebworth fielding. It got so bad, so early that the watching Stevenage players decided to compile a Dropped Catch Tally and a Thrown Hat Tally. At the end of the game the DCT = 13 and the THT = 5.
Man of the match:- M.Price, but a special mention for the keeping and batting of J. Mitchell.

26th July - Flamstead vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 9 wickets

Stevenage 4ths were well beaten by a strong home side away to Flamstead. They struggled from the off, after being inserted by the home side on a rain affected wicket and got bowled out for 46, which gives you no way out

19th July - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs Rising Stars

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 9 wickets

Stevenage 4ths were well beaten by a strong Rising Stars side. The following is a Full and Uncensored Match Summary by TSH
Lost toss as usual.
Put in.
They were a class above, we were a class below.

The 4ths need to hang in there, they come up against a number of first XI sides in the league and so will suffer on occasions, but should in the long term benefit from the recent appearance of a 5th XI that is playing friendly for the rest of the season in preparation, hopefully, for entry into a league next season. The 5ths have a host of new players and provide additional development opportunities for the Colts all of which should feed through to the benefit of Trevor's 4th XI.
The 5ths skippered by Sav Balac, this week had a narrow defeat to Knebworth. Highlights were Richard Hedley's first runs for Stevenage and an amazing and amazingly short spell of seam bowling from Adam Payne (1.2/0/5/3).

12th July - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs Old Elizabethans

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 7 wickets

Apologies to the 4th XI, but there is very little information available from which to produce a match report. Stevenage 4ths were well beaten by a strong visiting side from Old Elizabethans on an excellent KGV wicket. Only Richard Sullivan (79), who has been in a rich vein of form of late (3rd consecutive league 50) made a significant contribution. Sullivan, who was heard bemoaning the absence of a M.O.M award for last weeks 50, will be pleased to see his innings has been deemed worthy of this weeks M.O.M.

28th June - Broxbourne vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Match Drawn

Stevenage lost the toss again and were put in by Broxbourne. But while Simon Luxton struggled for his 8, Jason Pateman and Richard Sullivan came together to put on 82 before Pateman was out for 44. The runs then flowed steadily, with Sullivan 52 and Balac 45not out, to post a total of 247 for 9.

Broxbourne began their reply at a steady rate until Scott-Hibbert 4 for 32 from 10 and Wilson 8 overs for 21 runs slowed their progress. With 1 wicket needed in the final over the last Broxbourne batsman was stumped by Ted Reeve a good foot out of his crease. Unfortunately, the square leg umpire bowed to pressure from his team and gave an incomprehensible not out decision, leaving Stevenage denied the win they deserved.

21st June - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 8 wickets

Stevenage totalled 252 for 9, but it was never enough to hold back a very strong visiting side from Bentley Heath. Richard Sullivan top scored with 76 and Lucius Fulgence opened the innnings with 36, but the highlight was an unbeaten 9th wicket stand of 82 between Jason Pateman 58no and Matt Lewing 36 no.

Stevenage skipper Trevor Scott-Hibbert, tried 7 different bowlers but to no avail as the home side's bowlers were put to the sword.
MoM: Richard Sullivan

14th June - Cheshunt 1st XI vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 5 wickets

Stevenage 4ths inched to a total of 125 all out in only 34 overs, with a total of 4 ducks bagged by the Stevenage batters and only Andy Gould's 41 worthy of mention.

Stevenage then had Cheshunt, in all sorts of trouble at 68 for 5, thanks to an awesome display of high quality seam and swing bowling from the former St Neots stalwart Kevin Fisher,(Kevin, too much?, OK?, or not enough?), but unfortunately they were unable to turn the screw and the home side ran out comfortable winners.
MoM: Andy Gould / Kevin Fisher

7th June - Kings Langley XI vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Won by 2 wickets

Stevenage 4ths amassed 227 at Kings Langley School. The in form Richard Young led the way with 84 and ably supported by Craig Whitworth ( 66 ) they put on 96 and the team scored their highest total of the season so far. However this was never enough on a small ground and the home side won in a canter.
MoM: Craig Whitworth

24th May - Brimsdown vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 4 wickets

Stevenage 4ths 166 (Richard Young 60, Howard Crompton 28) all out in 52 overs lost to Brimsdown 2nds 168 for 6 in 40 overs (Jason Pateman 15 - 1 - 63 - 5) by 4 wickets. An excellent match was finally decided by former Hertfordshire player Tony Tilbrook playing in a match way below his ability. Any likelihood of Stevenage winning was dispelled when he smashed 71 in double quick time. Richard Young batted superbly and Jason Pateman likewise bowled well for his five wickets, but it was in the catching that the visitors fell short of expectations, badly dropping Tilbrook when had scored only ten.

RESULT - Rained Off

As Eric and Ernie so regularly sang "Bring me sunshine"

10th May - Letchworth 4th XI vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Letchworth won by 39 runs

3rd May - STEVENAGE 4th XI vs Harpenden Dolphins

RESULT - Harpenden Dolphins Won by 7 wickets

New Stevenage Captain Trevor Scott- Hibbert had a very difficult introduction to league cricket. He lost the toss and was inserted and against tight bowling they made a steady start being 26 for 1 off 15 overs, but only Craig Whitworth ( 19 ) and Savo Balac showed any form. The introduction of slow bowlers resulted in a spectacular collapse as the team were bowled out in 29 overs for a disappointing total. 15 year old John Mould bowled well taking a wicket and also an excellent catch in the deep. Balac also bowled a couple of good overs and showed excellent spirit. Skippers Stevenage M o M - Savo Balac
