21st September - Hatfield vs STEVENAGE

RESULT - Stevenage won by 3 wickets

The late summer feast of runs in the HSL spilled over into Autumn as 10 man Stevenage chased a huge total of 282 to win. The day got off the best possible start for Stevenage with Simon Roberts getting the opener caught behind by Carr off the first ball of the day. In fact the dual left arm over pace attack of Roberts and Kevin Jones had a generally tidy start. However, despite decent back up spells from Kevin Fisher and Joel Hippolyte both picking up a wicket the total steadily built as the inexperienced and under-manned Stevnenage side struggled to maintain fielding standards. The Hatfield number 4 seemed to have taken the game away from Stevenage as he smached a quick fire 86 being particularly harsh on the spinners. The bowling changes were regular but it did little to slow the run-rate although wickets kept falling. A total of 281 was acheived and the home side went into the break full of confidence.
On the short walk to the middle the Stevenage openers, David Carr and Gary Brown, devised a with a simple plan for acheiving victory ..... get all the runs ourselves and get them before it gets too dark. The first over went for 19 runs and the first wicket partnership put on a massive 234 runs, leaving 48 runs to win from 9 overs. Carr was dismissed caught at point for 99, but Brown stuck around until the last over scoring the majority of the remaining runs with sensible but aggressive hitting in what was an incredibly mature innings. Roberts, Bayes and Fisher were dismissed cheaply as they tried to force the pace and work the strike for Brown, so with 1 over and 5 balls left 5 runs were needed. Hatfield had their quickest bowler on and 13 year old Scott Davies walked out to the crease. He played and missed at his first 3 balls and at this stage not only were his mum and dad not watching his dog had its paws over its eyes. Luckly Davies was watching the last ball of the penultimate over as he cover drove it to the sweeper on the boundary, but only made a single. So 6 balls and 4 runs needed and Brown at the wrong end. Davies swept the first ball for a single and there was a collective sigh of relief, with Brown back on strike. Two swings and misses later Brown was out stumped for 135 and still 3 runs needed from only 3 balls. A nerveless Simon Luxton strode to the crease, with only Trevor Davies, Hippolyte and Jones left to bat. He played a textbook square cover drive to his first ball and sent it rocketing along the ground between the cover and point fielders and disappearing into the boundary hedge before the cover boundary sweeper had time to make any attempt at a diving stop. An incredible victory by the 10 man Stevenage side proving a fitting way to finish the season.

7th September - STEVENAGE vs Letchworth

RESULT - Stevenage lost by 8 runs

Stevenage slipped to a narrow defeat in an exciting local derby with Letchworth. Letchworth posted a large total of 275 thanks to sustained agricultural slogging and below par bowling from the Stevenage seamers.
In reply David Carr struck a technically correct century (his second in successive HSL games and fourth for Stevenage this season) eventually falling for 153 in the last over. He was well supported by a number of batsmen who all showed the benefit of good coaching in the face of some decent bowling. In fact it was Barry Hann; much coverted by Stevenage and much under-rated by Letchworth; with his legspin that got Letchworth back into the game picking up the wickets of Gary Brown and then his father Russell Hann in quick succession.

23rd August - STEVENAGE vs London Colney

RESULT - Stevenage Won by 60 runs

A change can do you good and a two month break from Herts on Sunday games seems to have done the trick. Stevenage returned to form in this competition; which they won in 2002; by comfortably defeating London Colney. David Carr (116) lead the way with a dashing innings full of strokeplay. Supported by Gary Brown (32) and Albert Sodhi (36), Carr (wearing one of Stevenage's NEW SHIRTS See Latest News for details) made sure Stevenage set a formidable total of 241.

The visitors were always behind the "clock" and when Ian Brown took four early wickets their task became nigh on impossible although they put up a good fight before they succumbed in the chase for runs to the bowling of Barry Turner (who was sporting one of Stevenage's NEW CAPS See Latest News for details)

7th June - Cricketers vs STEVENAGE

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 23 runs

Another disappointing result for the Sunday side. The bowling was OK without being good enough, with Mahesh returning very economic figures and Hamilton picking up a couple of wickets, but it was the fielding that really disappointed with at least 8 chances going down, all after a stunning catch in the deep by Matt Larman to get things off to a decent start. The total of 168 from a total of 39 overs was really 50 more than should have been acheived but for the woefull fielding.

In reply, the Cricketers showed how things should have been done with a number of good catches and not one missed chance. Only Barry Turner with 65 showed the kind of judgement that was required and if he had been given any substantial support by the rest of the batsman, Stevenage would have cruised to victory rather than falling 23 short at the end of the last over.

18th May - Welwyn Garden City vs STEVENAGE

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 158 runs

Unfortunately that isn't a typo, it is possible to lose by such a margin in a 45 over game. The omens were bad before the team left Stevenage, with the second XI kidnapping the first's eleventh man and things went from bad to worse. Stevenage lost the toss and were made to field on a damp wicket with further intermittent rain showers causing the pitch to deteriorate further. Only Simon Luxton of the bowlers returned respectable figures (7/0/29/2) although no-one could be particularly proud of their spells on such a helpful pitch. Despite the poor performance the spirit was resonably high and the sight of Andy Armstrong uprooting B.Tamblyn's middle stump proved worth waiting for. So set 207 to win in 35 overs, Stevenage set about the chase without thought of failure, which is just as well because if they had, they probably would have gone home as soon as they left the field at the end of Welwyn's innings.

An opening partnership of 26 from 6 overs between Carr (13) and Elf (13) was as good as it got because from then on the wickets tumbled to leave a paltry final score of 48 all out in the 21st over.

4th May - STEVENAGE vs Cottered

RESULT - Stevenage Win because Cottered failed to raise a side

27th April - STEVENAGE vs St Albans

RESULT - Stevenage Lost By 60 runs

Stevenage got off to a poor start in their defence of the Herts on Sunday, although they were beaten by a strong St Albans side. St Albans batted first and made 200 runs, with all the Stevenage bowlers chipping in with wickets, but only Simon Luxton and Joel Hippolyte returning decent figures. In reply the Stevenage top order let the side down with a lacklustre batting display against accurate but largely unthreatening bowling. It was left to Stevenage debutant Kev Fisher with 25 batting at number 8 and Richard Hamilton with 41 to pick up some batting points and add a bit of respectability to the scoreline.
