The day finally arrived on saturday, yes the 4s have won a game and in some style it has to be said. Winning the toss and choosing to bat on a damp wicket the team got off to a flyer, Craig Whitworth [34] and Richard Curtis [84] putting on 117 for the first wicket, Curtis ( 16 year Barclay School pupil, scoring his first fifty for the club). This gave the team confidence and the lower middle order of Tim Wall [22] Phil Ashby [15n.o.] and Ashley Daniels (another Barclay pupil) on debut [31n.o.] then ensured the teams best total of the season so far 236-5

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 9 wickets

A bad day for the 4th's. A disastrous start, losing both openers in the first over without a run on the board. The team never recovered. Only Sudesh Bell (29) looked comfortable against opponents who included a first eleven bowler, coming back from injury, and he was too hot to handle for the rest of the batsmen.

Man of the Match - Sudesh Bell

Rickmansworth 3rds vs STEVENAGE 4ths

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 4 wickets

Put in to bat on an artificial wicket the 4s posted a respectable 185-8 from 53 overs, star turns coming from both openers Craig Whitworth 63 and on debut Richard Curtis 39. Unfortunately after such a promising start the batting fell away with Sudesh being the only other batsman to reach double figures with a quick fire 34. Rickmansworth reached their target in the penultimate over despite the efforts of Ian Brown whose spell of 17.1 overs brought 4 wickets at a cost of only 34 runs and included 8 maidens. A handy contribution was also provided by Simon Wood (18no), who showing that sort of potential with the bat will soon himself a couple of places higher in the batting order.

The bowlers were unable to prevent Northwood winning the game, but five wickets were taken and some confidence should have returned to the side in time for next weeks visit to rock bottom Rickmansworth. The pick of the bowling was Captain Phil Ashby, whose return was 14 overs 2 maidens 2 wickets for 36 runs.

Man of the Match - Craig Whitworth

Southgate Adelaide vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 174 runs

The home side won the toss and decided to bat on what appeared to be a bowler friendly wicket, or so Stevenage thought. Stevenage's first four bowlers can consider themselves unlucky as they continually beat the edge of the bat, but between them the 36 overs yielded a paltry 2 wickets and the runs built up. Some rapid bowling changes and lady luck back in the fold saw the wickets begin to tumble, with the new boy, Simon Wood returning the healthy figures of 3 overs four wickets for 19 runs. In the meantime the total had reached 266 for 6 and Southgate decided to declare.
In reply once again the majority of the side forgot what to do with their wooden implements and capitualted to 92 all out, with only two batsmen making it into double figures. Craig Whitworth was the pick with a patient knock of 26 while wickets played domino rallies around him. Terry Ashby was the other who made 13 runs as he continues to develop in the side. On a more positive note, Kev Rowland, who had been practicing one handed catching most the net practice the Tuesday before produced a stunning one handed catch at silly mid wicket of a full blooded drive.

Man of the Match - Simon Wood

Broxbourne 3rds vs STEVENAGE 4th XI

RESULT - Stevenage Lost by 185 runs

The 4's were well and truely stitched up in their first league game. With shocking availability as a knock on from the problems experienced by the 2's they came up against a revitalised Broxbourne team that contained a number of the former Brimstone 1st XI who had played 5 divisions higher in 2004, after which the Club disbanded. Broxbourne won the toss and batted first, racking up a huge total of 282 for 4. The only bowler who came up with respectable figures was Rakesh Ladd who finished with figures of 7 overs, 2 wickets for 18 runs. Sav Balac produced a tight spell of bowling in the context of the game, with 7 overs, 1 maiden, no wickets, for 23 runs and inspired such confidence in his captain Phil Ashby that Ashby positioned himself in at short leg for a few overs.

In reply the 4's batted hard against impressive bowling but fell well short at 97 all out. Only 3 batsmen reach double figures, with the top scorer, wicketkeeper batsman Andy Whitehead, whose 20 runs included a huge six. The other two were Tim Wall (18) on his Stevenage debut and Craig Whitworth (14no), with Terry Ashby contributing 9 runs at number 3.

Man of the Match - Rakesh (Our Lad) Ladd
