PETER ALLEN - Stevenage cricket club No 1 ALLROUNDER

Stevenage Cricket Club is mourning the loss of one of the most dedicated and influential members in the history of the Club.

Peter Allen joined Stevenage Cricket Club after leaving the RAF in 1958 and played 1st XI cricket for over 50 years. He was a hard hitting No. 3 batsman, a right-arm swing bowler and his massive hands were a great asset in taking many catches particularly in the gully area. His longevity as a 1st XI player is testament to his outstanding ability and value to the team over five decades.

But it was not just on the field of play that Peter made his mark. He was a former 1st XI Captain, where he gave a 14 year old Roland Butcher his introduction to adult cricket, Club Captain and was the Club Groundsman for many years as well as holding numerous other Committee positions. In the late 1970’s he was instrumental in developing and building the new pavilion.

After his retirement from playing, Peter continued to take an active interest in the Club and served as President from 1994 to 2015, where his Presidents’ Day lunches were very well received by all those present.

Throughout his long association with the Club, Peter was supported by his wife Gill, who remains a popular and much loved member of the Club. The thoughts of everyone at Stevenage Cricket Club are with Gill and her two daughters Tracey and Joanne.

The funeral will be held at North Herts Crematorium, Bedford Road, Holwell on Wednesday 2 July at 12 noon. Family flowers only and donations to Sue Ryder.

Also, this coming Saturday 14th June at 11.55 there will be a minutes silence prior to the commencement of the 1st Xl match v Radlett. We thank Radlett for their co-operation.
